I have always loved keeping up with my social media accounts and I would have considered myself pretty knowledgable in social media; well I did until I start reading The Art of Social Media. I have only read through two chapters of this book so far and Guy Kawasaki has already listed many topics that have surprised me.
One point that made me laugh was point one in chapter one, "Pick a Neutral Screen Name." I laugh because when I first created my Instagram (in sixth grade) I created the username @futureamericanidol' 12 year old McKenna didn't see a problem in it because it was cute for my age and I love to sing so it was a good username for me. Well then eight years later, I find myself not able to change my instagram name because people began to know me by @futureamericanidol and I felt connected to it. Guy explains in this point that you have to think years in advance when creating a username so when you, for example, are applying for a job, its easier to search and find you on social media.
It wasn't until I auditioned for The Voice that I decided to change my username to my first and last name. Filling out the paperwork and putting @futureamericanidol on The Voice's social media paperwork just didn't feel right. I hate that young me decided to make a silly username because it took a long time to build my following and it almost felt like I was restarting just because I changed my username.
I always had a sneaking suspicion that I should make all my social media's with the same username and just a basic username so I wouldn't regret it, but who knew Instagram would become so important that future employers check it out? I think I figured at the time I made the account Instagram would just die like myspace did, but boy was I wrong.

I can totally relate to this. For me though, it was my email address. I named it 'my_monkey98' and looking back now I laugh at my decision. As I got older I started using it as my trash email & now I don't use it as all. I currently have two emails that use my first and last name that I use professionally.
ReplyDeleteYes! I felt the same as my first Instagram and Skype account were like @queenannagreat which is also not very shy. I could not call to my tutors or employees because of that after several years. It is also especially noticeable when you change your name and your followers do not understand what is this person with the changed name. Social Media accounts are extremely important in modern communication.
ReplyDeleteHello, I really enjoyed reading your post! I have just started in the social media field and created all of my accounts in March of 2019. I have used all the same usernames and pictures when it comes to all of my accounts and that is something that I have found helps me a ton. I use social media more from a career stand point than personal overall.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,
