Chapter 10 of "The Art of Social Media" talks about a lot of "don'ts" when using social media. Some are obvious, some aren't, but they are all helpful either way. I have heard of a lot of people doing some of the things to make their social media better, but clearly, it's not making it better; only worse.
A few of my favorite points Guy makes in Chapter 10 are don't buy followers or likes, don't ask people to follow you, and don't swear. He tells us that buying followers or likes makes you look worse because when you buy these you don't get the response you need to actually help your business succeed. Not to mention, being a young female on social media, I can easily point out the people that buy their followers because they always have a lot of followers, but very little likes. It honestly makes you look worse.
He also tells us to not ask people to follow you. He basically says if your social media is good enough you shouldn't need to ask people to follow you, that would just make you look desperate and it would steer people away from following you. He does explain that there is a difference between asking someone to follow you and sharing your social links on your blog. This is just helping people locate your social media, not asking for the followers.
The last point I focus on is don't swear. I laughed at the first line because it said, "Swearing is bullshit." I love clever lines like that. But in all seriousness, swearing can make you look unintelligent or unprofessional and that is something you do not want your followers to assume from you. Also, I think it is important to try and be a role model for younger girls, so I believe in keeping social media clean and for all ages.
We have now finished reading this book and it has taught me a lot about social media and what I can do to improve my social media or the business' that I will be working for. I am really excited to take what I have learned and apply it to my personal accounts to start preparing for my dream job one day.
I think that Guy provides many helpful tips in this book. He gives out somewhat common sense information that people need to hear because most of us likely don't follow what he is saying. For example, there are many people I follow that use swear words in their post and I just wonder to myself what that would look like to a future employer/superior.
