Keeping up with personal social media accounts is easy right? So how much harder can running a group or organization's social media be? This is exactly what I thought before taking over the role of social media manager for my signing duo that I have formed with my cousin. We decided to start singing together at the beginning of summer this past year for a singing competition in my hometown. We ended up winning the competition so we decided to not stop at this competition and began booking shows.
One of our first steps in creating the duo was creating social media. My cousin isn't big into social media, so I decided to take it over. I created a little bit of a following on my own personal social media accounts so I figured it would be easy; plus, I'm working on my Bachelor's in Marketing and a minor in Social Media. This was right up my alley and it made me kind of excited to take on this role. But let me tell you, running a business type Instagram and/or Facebook is not like running your personal accounts. I had to learn how to use the analytics provided by each application and what time and type of things to post to get the most attention.
I have found my audience is mainly young adults to middle aged people so it's best to post earlier or later in the day to catch them while they're not busy at work. I have also found because my cousin and I sing, people react well to short videos of us singing different songs. We have also decided to start interacting the crowd at shows by creating polls about which song they want to hear recorded or just what songs they like the best. This not only helps us gain followers, but makes the people in the audience feel like they are playing a part in our decision making for the future.
Taking on the role of running our social media has been a big learning experience for me and I am very thankful for everything it has taught me. I'm hoping to learn even more this semester in my Principles of Social Media course so I can create the best and most effective accounts to help our duo thrive.
